My Travel News

Morocco & Mauritania, December 2004
Decided to follow the Atlantic route across the Sahara Desert from Casablanca in Morocco to Nouakchott in Mauritania. Travelled on the iron ore train in Mauritania to reach the historic and dramatic Adrar plateau.

Iran, October 2003
I spent a month travelling around Iran visiting the historic cities of Esfahan, Shiraz and Bam amongst other places, as well as trekking in the Alborz Mountains.

Istanbul, Turkey, April 2003
I visited this historic city, straddling the European and Asian continents, for a long weekend over Easter.

Egypt January 2003
I spent a relaxing couple of weeks in January exploring the oases of the Western Desert in Egypt while I was in between jobs. It was a welcome return to the Middle East region, a part of the world I really enjoy travelling in.

The Big African Adventure 2002
At the end of July 2002 I returned from a 27-week journey through Eastern and Southern Africa. During the trip I visited; Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia. I have now loaded up all the photos from this six-month trip. The travelogue is now completed.

Future Plans

Since 2005 I have decided to concentrate more of my time on hiking/trekking trips. I will spending my time gaining more mountaineering experience with more frequent trips to the European Alps, to enjoy both skiing and high altitude trekking. My backpacking days to countries most people had never heard of have been put on hold for the time being while I pursue my mountain climbing ambitions.

Next Trip

September 2006: 2 weeks trekking in the Stubai Alps, including the Stubai Hohenweg trail.

A Little About Me

I first started travelling on 5th June 1990 when I quit my job and purchased a round the world ticket. My first destination outside of Europe was Bangkok, where I first encountered culture shock. The majority of my time I spent working and travelling in Australia, before returning home via New Zealand and Canada, where I hitchhiked the trans-Canadian highway.

That first trip lasted 13 months, in which time I hoped I would get a spark of inspiration as to what career and which direction to take my life. It didn't happen, so after spending a summer watching cricket back home I flew to Tel Aviv and rocked up on a kibbutz where I spent the next 8 months, finally returning home in July 1992.

I didn't appreciate it at the time while I lived in Israel but it was then that I found the direction in my life I had been looking for; travel. I became fascinated by the history, both modern and ancient of the Middle East. Massada was the first ancient ruined city I visited and it was there that I heard about Petra, which lay in the mountains on the other side of the Dead Sea. I decided that I would return to this region to visit Petra and explore other ruined cities.

It took a couple of years to save enough money and in 1994 I visited both Jordan and Syria. I returned again in 1997, this time travelling through Israel, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. In 1998 I continued travelling around the Middle East and spent a couple of weeks in Egypt before flying to Yemen where I spent just over three weeks touring around the country.

The rest of my travels from 1999 onwards appear in detail on this site. I have tried over the years to keep my journeys connected by spending time visiting the same region to see how the culture changes as you cross borders from one nation to another. My main interests while travelling have been history, archaeology and architecture, which I think you'll find reflected on this site. I also enjoy trekking and being away from civilisation either up in the mountains or out in a remote desert, where the silence is quite literally deafening.

I prefer to travel independently as this allows far more interaction with the local people; it's the local people who can really teach you about their country, their hopes and dreams, which quickly puts my life into perspective.

Meanwhile when I'm not travelling I live in Dorset, England, which I argue is the most beautiful place in the world. I pursue my alto-ego as an International Banker rather than an international traveller, which pays for my travelling.

I work to travel, not travel to work

About This Site

I first began designing this site in April 2000. The idea back then was to design a site so that family and friends overseas could catch up on my latest travels. In July 2000 the first version of this site went online.

Since then it has somewhat snowballed and developed a life of it's own; at last count there were 195 pages and 949 photos. This is version three of this site, which was loaded up in May 2004.
