Iran

I spent four weeks visiting Iran during October 2003 arriving in Tehran and trekking in the Alborz Mountains. I travelled to Bam via Kerman and on to the Gulf coast to visit Hormoz Island. The second half of my trip took me to the imperial cities of Shiraz and Esfahan, also stopping at the desert city of Yazd.

The gatehouse to the old city of Bam. The mud brick city walls of Bam. The Bazaar along the main street from the city gates.
The gatehouse to the citadel, which dominates the north of the city. View over the old city from the walls of the citadel. View through a window in the citadel.
The citadel, one of the most impressive mud brick buildings I have visited. The citadel at sunset with the domed roof of the mosque in the foreground. Dhows in the small harbour at Hormoz Island.
The southern wall of the Portuguese fort situated at the northern tip of Hormoz Island. Looking south over the central courtyard of the fort, which was built in 1515. Many of the walls and arches appear very unsafe, after standing for hundreds of years with very little restoration.
The beautifully simple vaulted ceilings of the underground church in the courtyard. View looking north over the courtyard from the southern ramparts. Looking south from the battlements across the small town of Hormoz.
